The Astronomer AGM 2000 - Basingstoke
- UK
2000
Oct 7: The not-to-be-missed annual meeting of The
Astronomer, held at St Mary's Church Hall - Basingstoke, is
the opportunity to meet top amateur astronomers and hear an excellent range
of talks in familiar surroundings. Three of the talks were on the hot topic
of gamma-ray bursters [reputedly a thousand times more energetic than supernovae]
and included the first amateur CCD images of a GRB optical afterglow. Guy
Hurst reminisced on 25 Years as TA Editor and presented book prizes
to Terry Platt [cover award] and Tom Boles [best overall contribution]
for the last year. At this point Denis Buczynski, on behalf of the TA membership,
interrupted proceedings to present a surprised Guy and Ann Hurst with presents
for their invaluable service over 25 years to prolonged applause.
