wpo - supernovae + spectra

The following brighter SNe were successfully targeted for their spectra etc.
SN 1999dn in NGC 7714 [Psc]    SN 1999by in NGC 2841 [UMa]    SN 2001bg in NGC 2608 [Cnc]

Further SNe images below i.e. ......
SN 1998bu in M96 [Leo] -  SN 1999do in Markarian 922 [Peg]  - SN 1999aa in NGC 2595 [Cnc]

1998 May 19: an amateur first? A spectrogram of SN1998bu in M96 showing the strong absorption band due to silicon (Si II) at 612nm typical of type 1a SN was captured via the Mk1a home-made prism spectroscope. From November 1998 WPO spectra taken via a Rainbow 'filter' [grating in the convergent beam of 30cm LX200 ~20mm from CCD surface] have proved more effective and include the zero order [real image] for line measurement.

1999 Aug 25 : SN1999do in Markarian 922 [Peg] was discovered by the LOSS Team at Lick Observatory a few days ago and is well placed above the Square of Pegasus. The following image, captured under hazy conditions and a full moon, just shows the SN as a tiny bulge east of the galaxy. At <5" from the nucleus, spectroscopy is impractical from WPO. SN is classified as type 1c from pro spectra.

This third supernova SN1999aa discovered by Ron Arbour - South Wonston - Hants - UK. Brief 60 second exposure through cloud breaks. Spectrum taken a few days earlier in 25 min exposure but at <m15 is at the limit of detection and inconclusive as to SN type. The SN has since brightened as the main image indicates.

1999 Feb 22 : although a spectrum of SN1999aa in NGC 2595 [Cnc] was captured it proved rather faint to extract any useful data. Both a regular image and spectrum are contained in the following image.
