wpo - astronomy meetings
BAA Instruments & Imaging Section AGM - 2000

2000 May 6 - held at the Humfrey
Rooms - Castilian Terrace - Northampton - UK on a beautiful sunny day [it's
been dull and wet of late!] graced [outside!] by the first swallows of
summer. The attendance was about 60 of the UK's keenest observers,
opticians and telescope makers. These are a few of my pics from the day.

During the morning session space author David Shayler
spoke on the
Hubble Space Telescope and John Wall on his massive
30-inch
Refractor - his 'final' big project. The post lunch session included
Bob Marriott [for Henry Hatfield] showing results from the upgraded Sevenoak's
Spectrohelioscope, John Saxton on a Telescope Drive Corrector
and Guy Hurst on correct procedures for Reporting Discoveries.
The final session Guy spoke again this time on Patrolling for Nova
via a fixed CCD camera with standard 50mm lens, I&I Director Bob Neville
on an Offset Tracking Devise using a motorized tilting plane glass
'filter' and Bob Marriott on an emotive Visit to Hardwick -
Herefordshire - home of Rev T.W. Webb and Tow Law - Co. Durham.
Rev T.H.E.C. Espin [Webb's executor with G.W. With] was vicar here from
1888 to 1934 and Bob's grandfather was born and brought up in the same
village. Finally BAA President Nick Hewitt described his fine
4-3/8-inch
[111mm]
aperture Wray Refractor circa 1880s on display in the hall.
Under Bob Marriott's witty and lively chairmanship - these are always enjoyable
meetings. Maurice Gavin
